I've owned the HT-AS720ST for over a year now and to be honest, I couldn't really be happier with it. In fact, I'm considering buying another one for the main floor living room. In a word.flawless.
I wouldn't say anything about using this device is counter-intuitive, but it's an intricate piece of machinery with a lot of variables. Those concerns have been put to rest by adding a dell computer to the inputs as well as changing TVs to a Panasonic for a short time. I've read some of the other reviews and I've experienced similar problems and in the long run I realized that the problems were caused by my lack of experience with it, not malfunctions in the equipment.
I was nervous about compatability with other brands at the time of purchase. Once I got it set up correctly, I haven't adjusted a thing. To be fair, I've read some reviews that complain about the remote and I personally bought a harmony 880 to run the HTS and my Samsung plasma as well as a Samsung BDP1500.
All in all, GREAT sound and no real problems once I got it set up correctly makes this a fantastic bargain at under $400. I just plain love it.
The box keeps reverting back to 480i even if I change it to 480p in the settings menu. Samsung claims you can use this unit as a "pass through 1080p" So I should be able to connect my PS3 to the Receiver then to my TV.My Setup is as follows: I would connect my Cable Box and PS3 to the Receiver via HDMI In then connect the receiver to the TV via HDMI out. Since day 1 I have had issues with this unit. Comcast has no explanation but if I connect it directly to the TV instead of passing through the Samsung receiver it is fine.I am blaming Samsung on this one. When switching inputs on the receiver from TV to PS3 the receiver would have a brain fart & the screen went blank. Samsung said the receiver has problems descrambling the PS3 sometimes and they said to just use HDMI for video direct PS3 to TV then use Optical for Audio ( Isnt the point of HDMI to have Audio/Video Samsung sucks for giving me that answer)Since I bought a new tv which does not support 480i only 480p I have had to change my cable box from 480i to 480p to view non-hd stations in the settings portion of my cable box. Why offer pass through HDMI if you can't use it properly.
The unit I purchased from Electronic Expo through Amazon was out of stock. Off or standby leads to the loss of settings. the hdmi inputs are hard to select; the hdmi output is sometimes acts strangely. The reviews AT THAT TIME indicated little difference, and I accepted the new model. The 730 works for us only because we use it exclusively with TV and Blue Ray. The Anynet feature does not seem to work well with the 650 Samsung TV line. For the price the unit seems a good alternative to combined cd or blue ray home theaters, but it is not really up to the next level. There are several problems: 1. Electronic Expo offered to provide the 730 at the same price. 3.
registering it with Samsung, 2. the FM tuner saves stations to preset only so long as you leave the unit on. 4. For my configuration the best set up involves using hdmi connectors for the cable box and blue ray directly to the TV with paired optical audio cables to the home theatre.
It's not the most powerful system out there but for the price you can't go wrong. I purchased this system to experience home theater sound with my new Samsung TV. It is loud enough to sound like your at the movies. The sound is amazing right out of the box. It took about an hour to hook up but it was easy. You can experience the movies without ever leaving the comfort of your home. The receiver is a little big, but if you have room it will work nice.
I had some reservations about purchasing this product after reading other reviews. I did use (3) HDMI 1.3 compliant cables for all connections; as well as (1) optical cable as directed for sound. After allowing Anynet to find my other components I am able to perform everyday viewing tasks with one remote. I'm pleased to say that the product has performed flawlessly. Amazon price and delivery were excellent as usual. The sound is great; it fills my large living room with sound. Ultimately I decided to get it, figuring I could return it if there were problems. The Anynet feature works fine.
I have it installed with a Samsung plasma display & Samsung BD 1500 Blue Ray player. Contrary to other reviews I had no problem hooking it up according to the manual. Advanced features of the TV still require using the remote for the TV. So far, I am completely satisfied with this purchase.
